Origins  Generation 1   Generation 3   Generation 4   Generation 5   Generation 6   Generation 7a Generation 7b

Note: The lineage from Generation 1 to Generation 4 is believed but not absolutely proven to be a direct lineage, but they are doubtless of the same family.  Generations 4-5 are proven by original documentation of the period to be a direct paternal relationship.  Generations 5-7 almost certainly represent a direct lineage given that the man in Generation 7 sold the property owned and passed down by Generation 4.

Generation 2

Nicholas Udny of County Cavan, Ireland

NICHOLAS UDNY was born between 1610 and 1614 in County Cavan, Ireland and died after 1630.  The only extant record of him is dated 1630, when he appears with the man who is believed to be his father.

In 1630, Nicholas Owdny and Oliver Owdny both were recorded on the Muster Roll for County Cavan as living in the barony of Loughty under Sir Francis Hamilton.1/  All men ages 16 through 60 were liable to service in the military.2/  A less common forename among the Irish, Nicholas appears twice again in the Widney family : (1) Nicholas Widney b. 16__, d. 1731 in Killymurry, County Monaghan; and (2) Nicholas Widney b. 17__, d. ca. 1780 in Dublin.

The spelling "Owdny" likely represents an unintentional transposition of the first two letters in "Wodny".  Wodney is one of two spellings by which Oliver is found in the record of his military service.

Considering the absolute rarity of Widneys/Udnys in Ireland during this era, or at any time in fact, and the known equivalency of Widney and Udny, the presumed son of Nicholas Udny is Nicholas Widney of Killymurry For a complete record of the Widney family of Ireland through the end of the 18th century, the evidence of their Scottish roots, and a discussion of Widney origins as told by Dr. George Wilds Linn, see :
